Free Festive Activities The Whole Family Will Love

A question we get asked often is for budget ideas when it comes to days out. I thought I would put together a few ideas for Free or very cheap festive ideas. Please don't feel pressured into thinking you have to be going to expensive events to make memories because that is absolutley not the case.

Free Ideas

⭐Kinship Panto - Deptford & Millfield Community Centre - Free to attend and donations are welcomed.


Durham Christmas Festival - 1st-3rd December


⭐Free Christmas family funday - The Durham Centre- 2nd December


⭐Christmas Tree Lighting - Shotton Hall Peterlee


Rainton Arena's Winter wonderland is free entry but there is a small charge for each activity





⭐Mini Elves Christmas Parties - Stack Seaburn 3rd, 10th, 17th, 22nd December Free entry/drop in


⭐Elmer Exhibition with Crafts - Free to enter, Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens


⭐Snowman Trail - Middlesbrough - Free self led trail around the town centre - Running until 7th January


⭐Christmas Parade and Light switch on Saltburn - 2nd December


Ikea are running some fab free activities such as -

*Biscuit decorating- 2nd December

*Make your own tree decorations - 3rd December

*The Creche is also open and free whilst you browse the store





⭐A Georgian Christmas at Kirkleatham Museum 2nd/3rd December


⭐Christmas Extravaganza - Dorman Museum - Free entry with a small charge for crafts


Hexham Magic Music Trail - Free self led until 18th December


⭐Free Ice Skating at Metrocentre if you sign up to the mailing list or make a food bank donation


⭐Movie Nights at The Beacon Sunderland

*Elf - 8th December

*Home Alone - 22nd December






⭐South Tyneside Parade - 8th December


⭐Festive Forest Weekend - Hamsterley Forest 9th/10th December Free entry. Small charge for the Zog Christmas trail (£1.50) which includes a free hot chocolate and a christmas decoration.


⭐Frost Fest Weekend - Land of Oak & Iron 9th/10th December


⭐Meet the Grinch - Byron Place 20th December


Fenwicks Window is free to view and then you could head to one of the free museums





Cullercoats Community Advent Trail - Free self led


Sunderland Bid have some fantastic Free and small charge events running through the festive season

*The Christmas Stocking Trail until 7th January

*Christmas Character VR Trail - free to download the app - Until 7th January

*Ice Festival - 16th/17th December

*Festive sunniside food market

The following activities are also available for a small charge

*Pop Up Ice Rink

*Reindeer Dash - Bridges Shopping Centre


ICOS Santa Day - Bede Tower Sunderland - Free event with lots going on but you do need to pay a small fee for Santa(£4 per child)


⭐Flying Scotsman at Christmas - Locomotion - Free entry and you can climb on board for free too


Puffing Billy is back visiting lots of areas - You can also say hello to santa and his helpers as they pass by.






⭐Victorian Christmas Fayre - Donnisons School Sunderland 2nd December

Pleas note Santa in the photo is not a free one. This is a previous visit to see Santa in The Bridges which has a small charge.

Your local park and beaches are also great places to get some fresh air even during winter. Please do check the weather before you head out though.


⭐If you have any annual passes this is a great time to use them.

National Trust have some fantastic events on across the North East, Beamish is lovely this time of the year, Preston Park has loads on over the festive period and its only £15 for a family ticket.


⭐You could also have lots of fun at home and have movie afternoons, baking sessions, craft workshops etc.
