Sometimes you don't need a holiday.
You just need a free day, a full tank of petrol and somewhere beautiful to explore.
Here are some of my favourite autumn day-trip combinations across the North East and North Yorkshire.
🍂 1. Whitby + Robin Hood's Bay
Morning: Explore Whitby Abbey and the town.
Lunch: Fish and chips.
Afternoon: Drive to Robin Hood's Bay and explore the village.
Sunset: Head to the beach.
Perfect for: A classic Yorkshire autumn day.
🏰 2. Bamburgh + Seahouses
Morning: Bamburgh beach and castle views.
Lunch: Seahouses.
Afternoon: Walk along the coast.
Sunset: Return to Bamburgh for golden-hour photos.
🌲 3. Kielder Forest
Make this your full outdoor adventure day.
Walk, cycle, explore the forest and finish with stargazing.
Autumn is particularly good here because the days are shorter and you don't have to stay up ridiculously late for darkness.
🍁 4. Malham
Do the classic:
Malham Cove → Gordale Scar → Janet's Foss.
Allow plenty of time and wear proper footwear.
🚂 5. North Yorkshire Moors Railway + Pickering
Take the heritage railway and spend time exploring Pickering.
If you have younger children, add a farm or attraction.
If you have teenagers, make it a food-and-photography day.
🏛️ 6. Fountains Abbey + Ripon
Spend the morning exploring Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.
Then head into Ripon for lunch and a wander.
The estate is particularly lovely in autumn, with the deer adding to the atmosphere.
🏰 7. Alnwick + Alnmouth
Start at Alnwick Castle or The Alnwick Garden.
Then drive to Alnmouth for a coastal walk.
Finish with dinner overlooking the sea.
🌊 8. Craster + Dunstanburgh
Walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh Castle.
Take a picnic.
Return to Craster and have something warm afterwards.
Simple and spectacular.
🏞️ 9. Knaresborough + Harrogate
Start by exploring Knaresborough and the River Nidd.
Then head to Harrogate for afternoon tea, independent shops and a wander around the Stray.
🌳 10. Dalby Forest + Thornton-le-Dale
Spend the morning in Dalby Forest.
Then drive to Thornton-le-Dale for a wander and café stop.(Don't forget to check out the chocolate shop, its GF)
🏰 11. Castle Howard + York
Morning at Castle Howard.(You can easily spend the day in Castle Howard if you wanted to)
Lunch in York.
Afternoon exploring the Shambles and city centre.
Autumn evening in York is particularly atmospheric.
🌊 12. Tynemouth + Newcastle
Morning coastal walk at Tynemouth.
Lunch by the coast.
Afternoon in Newcastle.
Finish with dinner or a show.
🍂 13. Durham + Beamish
Combine two very different experiences.
Explore Durham's historic centre in the morning, then spend the afternoon at Beamish.
🌌 14. Northumberland Dark Skies
Sleep in if you can.
Have a slow countryside day.
Find somewhere for dinner.
Then head outside after dark for stargazing.
🧙 15. Whitby Halloween Day
Make October's spooky season the theme.
Whitby Abbey → town → ghost walk → Halloween event → dinner.
If you're visiting around 30 October–1 November 2026, you can also experience Whitby Goth Weekend.
The autumn day-trip formula
If you're planning your own trip, use this:
One beautiful place + one walk + one good meal + one little treat + one sunset spot.
That's all you need.
