Getting teenagers excited about a family day out can feel like a completely different challenge to when they were little.

The trick is to stop looking for activities that feel "child-friendly" and start looking for things that feel like an actual experience.

Here are 25 autumn ideas for teens across the North East and North Yorkshire.

🎃 1. Go pumpkin picking

Yes, even teenagers can enjoy it especially if there's food, music, photo opportunities or evening sessions involved.

My top Pick would be Spilmans as they have other things going on.

👻 2. Do a proper ghost walk

Whitby is an obvious choice.

Make it an evening trip rather than dragging them around during the day. York have some fantastic options. Even Newcastle has a ghost walk that looks fab

🌌 3. Go stargazing

Northumberland's dark skies are perfect for this.

Bring blankets, snacks and a hot chocolate flask.

🏎️ 4. Try something competitive

Go bowling, climbing, karting, escape-rooming or axe-throwing where age restrictions allow.

The competition is half the fun.

🍕 5. Have a food day

Pick a town and make the day revolve around food.

Breakfast → street food → dessert → café.

No museum required.

📸 6. Do an autumn photo challenge

Get them to use there phone camera and let them create the content.

You might be surprised how much more interested they become when they're in charge.

🏖️ 7. Go to the beach at sunset

Bamburgh, Seaburn, Tynemouth, Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay are all great choices.

🚂 8. Take a heritage train

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway or a North East heritage railway can turn a normal day out into an experience.

🏰 9. Explore a castle

But don't make it a history lesson.

Add lunch, photos, a challenge or a nearby walk.

🎃 10. Find a Halloween event aimed at tweens and teens

Hallowtween at York Maze is a good example of the sort of event that bridges the gap between little-kid Halloween and full-on horror. If you have older kids (14+) Psychopath is an absolute must.

🎃11. Go for a café crawl

Choose three cafés and rate:

  • Drinks

  • Cake

  • Atmosphere

  • Instagram potential

  • Value for money

🌊 12. Do a coastal challenge

Pick a section of the Cleveland Way or Northumberland Coast and walk it together.

🛍️ 13. Give them a small shopping budget

Take them to York, Newcastle, Durham, Harrogate or another town and let them choose what to spend it on.

🎮 14. Have an arcade challenge

Give everyone £10 and see who can turn it into the most tickets/prizes.

🍿 15. Go to an independent cinema

Then go somewhere for food afterwards.

🔥 16. Have a firepit night

If you have access to one, add blankets, toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate.

🥾 17. Do a sunrise walk

It sounds painful.

That's partly why they'll remember it.

🏔️ 18. Take on a proper hike

For active teens, try a challenging North York Moors or Yorkshire Dales route.

🎨 19. Do something creative

Look for pottery painting, art workshops, photography walks or craft sessions.

North East Museums has regular autumn creative activities, including sessions aimed at older children and teens.

🎵 20. Find a live music or comedy night

Check age restrictions before booking.

🧟 21. Go properly spooky

Halloween events are much more fun when teenagers can actually be scared.

🚂 22. Do a spontaneous train day

Pick a destination on the rail map and go.

No car. No parking. No complicated itinerary.

🍂 23. Make an autumn reel/TikTok together

Give them 30 minutes to film the perfect autumn montage.

🥞 24. Have a late breakfast somewhere nice

Brunch + autumn walk is an underrated combination.

🗺️ 25. Let the teenager plan the day

Give them a budget.

They choose where you go, where you eat and what you do.

You might get the best family day out of the whole autumn.
