The sun is out and the school holidays are creeping closer, and the North East calendar is absolutely bursting. I and busy working on lots of guides to make your summer one to remember and I'm starting with this guide.
If you have kids to entertain, you know that a long summer holiday requires a very strategic game plan. You need high energy, activities and plenty of distractions before the I'm Bored chorus sets in.
Here are the biggest, most exciting family events hitting the North East this summer (in my opinion) so grab your calendar, because you will want to get these locked in.
The Great Dinosaur Escape - Life Science Centre
The centre has been taken over by the North's largest collection of animatronic dinosaurs. Kids get to track down towering , roaring, four- metre high prehistoric beasts using an interactive trail, build their own brick creations, and check out some brilliant live science shows

Kynren: An Epic Tale of England
This multi-award-winning, outdoor, live-action night show is the ultimate family crowd-pleaser, especially for parents of tweens and teens. It covers 2,000 years of history with a cast of hundreds, massive stunt horses, combat, and a full-size steam train crossing the stage. For 2026 The Storied Lands, new day park opens.
When: Saturdays from 18th July to 12th September (plus newly added Fridays on 21st August and 4th September).
Tickets sell out months in advance for prime August weekend slots, particularly now that they've expanded the experience with new dining options.
The Great Yorkshire Show
Where: Harrogate, North Yorkshire
The absolute king of agricultural shows. It features a world-class main ring displays, massive food halls, celebrity chef appearances, military bands, and endless activities for kids. It’s an exhausting but legendary full day out.
When: Tuesday 14th July – Friday 17th July 2026
Tickets are advance purchase only; you cannot buy them on the gate, and popular days sell out fast.
Outdoor Cinema at Alnwick Castle
Watching family-favourite films on a massive screen under the stars with the magnificent backdrop of "Hogwarts" is an unforgettable experience. Families bring picnics, blankets, and camp chairs.
When: Wednesday 29th July – Sunday 2nd August
Capable of selling out rapidly once the film titles drop, as space on the castle lawns is strictly capped.
Castle Howard Outdoor Cinema
Where: Near Malton, North Yorkshire
A huge range of children’s and family films set in the jaw-dropping grounds of Castle Howard. It’s a great excuse to arrive early, let the kids burn off energy at the Skelf Island adventure playground, and stay for the movie.
When: Late July
Staxtonbury Family Music Festival
Where: Staxton, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire
Renowned as North Yorkshire's most family-friendly music festival. It features live tribute acts, local bands, massive kids' entertainment zones, hay bales to climb, and a genuinely relaxed, safe community atmosphere.
When: Friday 17th July – Sunday 19th July
Weekend camping tickets sell out well ahead of July.
Stockeld Park Summer Festival
Where: Wetherby, North Yorkshire
Stockeld Park turns up the heat in the summer with festival-themed events alongside their standard massive indoor Play hive and Enchanted Forest. Expect live musicians, magicians, and performers on site every single day.
When: Mid-July to 1st September

Beaver Enclosure Safaris at Wallington
Where: Morpeth, Northumberland
Run in partnership with Wild Intrigue, this allows older kids and parents to head into the hidden beaver enclosures at Wallington to catch a glimpse of the wild beavers brought back to Northumberland.
When: Selected dates across July and August
These are intimate, small-group guided tours and always sell out almost instantly when the dates are released.

Summer of Play & Circus Skills at Fountains Abbey
Where: Ripon, North Yorkshire
The National Trust goes all out here with giant outdoor lawn games, active play zones across the ancient ruins, and highly popular two-hour tutor-led circus skills workshops running every Tuesday.
When: Mid-July to end of August (Circus workshops on Tuesdays)
Beyond Van Gogh at the Utilita Arena
Where: Newcastle upon Tyne
A massive, world-renowned immersive digital art experience where Van Gogh's paintings come to life across the walls and floors. It’s spectacular, air-conditioned (perfect for a rainy or boiling summer day), and incredibly "Instagramable" for older kids and teens.
When: Sunday 12th July – Sunday 9th August
Tickets are sold in strictly timed slots. Weekend slots during the school holidays always sell out first.
Durham Fringe Festival 2026
Where: Durham City Centre
Durham turns into a mini-Edinburgh for five days. There is a brilliant line-up of performing arts across various city venues, including child-friendly magic shows, family comedy, street theatre, and circus acts.
When: Wednesday 29th July – Sunday 2nd August
Venues are intimate and historic, so seating is limited. Parents need to grab tickets as soon as the full programme drops.
The Fireworks Championships at Newby Hall
Where: Ripon, North Yorkshire
Three of the UK’s top fireworks companies go head-to-head, creating massive ten-minute displays choreographed to music, lighting up the sky over Newby Hall. Families turn up early with picnics, folding chairs, and blankets to bag the best spots on the lawn.
When: Late August
This is a one-night-only spectacular that always sells out completely.
The Durham Castle 950th Anniversary Celebrations
Where: Durham City Centre
Durham Castle is celebrating a massive 950 years since its construction. Over the summer holidays, they are running special family events, medieval knight days, live music, and castle courtyard parties.
When: Launching from Friday 31st July
Because of the historical significance, these anniversary tours and workshops will be high on the list for both tourists and locals.
Durham Brass Festival 2026
Where: Locations across Durham City and County Durham
Don't let the word "brass" fool you—this is a high-energy, loud, and incredibly fun international festival. Streets, parks, and venues fill with lively brass bands playing everything from traditional tunes to massive pop, rock, and ska covers. It has a fantastic carnival atmosphere that kids and teens absolutely love dancing along to.
When: Sunday 12th July – Sunday 19th July
While many of the outdoor street performances are free, the big headline concerts and park events require tickets that go fast in June.
Summer of Fun at Beamish Museum
Where: Stanley, County Durham
Beamish goes all out for its "Summer of Fun" season. Every single day of the holidays features rotating activities across the different time periods. Expect traditional games on the school yard, 1950s sports days, farming demonstrations, and pop-up musical performances.
When: Saturday 18th July – Monday 31st August
If you have a Beamish Unlimited Pass, all daytime summer holiday events are completely free to access, making it the ultimate value-for-money summer standby.
Discover Dinosaurs at High Force Waterfall
Where: Forest-in-Teesdale, County Durham
A brilliant, active outdoor trail that takes families through the woodland walk leading down to the spectacular High Force Waterfall. Kids get to follow a brand-new prehistoric dinosaur trail, tracking down giant footprints and learning fun facts along the way.
When: Running daily until 31st August
It’s an incredible, dramatic landscape that older kids love photographing, and the trail is completely dog-friendly (dogs just need to be on a lead near the water).
Summer Festival Family Day at Catterick Racecourse
Where: Catterick, North Yorkshire
Alongside the racing action, the course enclosure transforms into a massive kids' entertainment zone featuring giant pirate ship assault courses, bouncy castles, and traditional fairground games.
When: 26th July
Under-18s get in completely free when accompanied by an adult, making it a very affordable big day out, but adult tickets should be bagged online early for discounts.
The 156th Weardale Agricultural Show
Where: St John's Chapel, County Durham
If you want an authentic slice of country life to close out the summer, this is it. It features livestock competitions, local food tents, craft marquees, a dedicated children's entertainment arena, and inflatables. It has a wonderful, relaxed, community feel.
When: Saturday 29th August
Festival of the Fairies / Summer of Play at Lilidorei
Where: The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland
Lilidorei is the world’s largest play structure, and during the peak summer weeks, it operates on strictly timed sessions to keep the play safe and uncrowded. It features storytelling, hidden clan hunts, and massive, intricate climbing structures that appeal heavily to younger kids and adventurous tweens.
When: June to 12th July (Festival of the Fairies) followed immediately by the main Summer Holiday season (18th July – 30th August).
Combined tickets for The Alnwick Garden & Lilidorei save money but prime morning time slots across August fill up fast. (Note: Only assistance dogs are allowed inside Lilidorei, but Alnwick Garden allows pets on Thursdays and Sundays!)
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) Summer Explorer
Where: Pickering to Whitby
A classic heritage steam train ride that takes you across 24 miles of breathtaking North York Moors national park scenery. A massive hit for families is hopping off at Goathland Station, famously known to kids as Hogsmeade Station from the first Harry Potter film. It’s a brilliant way to travel into Whitby for fish and chips.
When: Daily departures throughout July and August
Group family tickets and specific timed departures (especially those pulled by the most famous historic steam locos) must be locked in weeks ahead during peak August tourist season.
Knights' Tournament at Alnwick Castle
Where: Alnwick, Northumberland
A spectacular, high-energy weekend where rival knights battle it out in full armour on the castle lawns. It features authentic medieval combat, comedy, and weapons demonstrations.
When: Late July & mid-August slots
Because it's a premium event included in the main castle admission, it draws thousands of extra visitors. I would advise booking your castle entry day ticket well in advance to guarantee a spot on the grounds.
Grand Medieval Joust at Scarborough Castle
Where: Scarborough, North Yorkshire
An absolute favourite for parents of older kids and teens. English Heritage brings charging horses, lances, and full-contact jousting to the dramatic cliffside ruins of Scarborough Castle. It's loud, fast-paced, and highly entertaining.
When: Early August
English Heritage members get in free, but non-members must pre-book online to secure admission slots before the castle gates hit full capacity.
