This post shares an honest account of the stay, highlighting what makes The Green at Lastingham a unique destination for those seeking calm and connection with nature.

A Peaceful Arrival

Arriving at The Green at Lastingham, the first thing that strikes you is the quiet charm of your surroundings. With traditional stone cottages and lots of trees around you, the air feels fresh, and you just know its going to be a relaxing stay.

The accommodation is very cosy and welcoming. The interior combines rustic charm with modern comfort, featuring exposed wooden beams, a wood-burning stove, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Although it is right in the centre of the village it didn't feel overlooked at all and it felt very cosy and comfortable. We had a relaxing evening watching tv in front of the stove, which was absolute bliss.

The cottage offers everything you could need for a comfortable stay. There's a lovely living room with plenty of seating options, tv, wood burning fire, lots of board games and there's even a bookcase full of books. You can find a piano and a table full of leaflets if you don't know what to do during your stay. The kitchen is lovely with an AGA for display. In the kitchen you have an easy to use oven, lots of utensils (although we couldn't find a pizza cutter) There's a downstairs toilet and utility room with a door that leads out into a small but very pretty garden with seating.

Upstairs you can find three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two single beds and one room with bunk beds. The beds are lovely and comfortable but I would say the only thing that would have made it better would have been a larger duvet for the double bed as it was really small. You can also find a lovely bathroom with bath and shower and some very lovely goats milk soap.

It is also pet friendly and you can find a lovely goody bag for your pooches as well as a lovely gift basket full of nice treats. Craig and Elliot enjoyed the biscuits (I'm gluten free so can't eat them) I did use the herbal tea which was lovely and the local honey is absolutely delicious. We did go to the honey farm to purchase more but they were out of stock.

Exploring the Natural Beauty

One of the highlights of the stay was the opportunity to explore the countryside around Lastingham. The village green serves as a natural starting point for several walking trails. These paths wind through rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and open fields, offering stunning views at every turn. We regularly visit Hutton Le Hole and it is just up the road so it is perfect for those long relaxing days wandering.

Walking along these trails, it’s easy to spot local wildlife such as deer, rabbits, and a variety of birds. The peaceful environment encourages slow, mindful walking, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the landscape. For those interested in history, the nearby ruins of Lastingham Priory add a fascinating cultural layer to the experience. There's a lovely looking church in the village which has an interesting crypt. Unfortunately we didn't get to visit but we do have it on our to do list for the next time we are in the area.

Community Spirit and Local Life

Despite its quiet nature, The Green at Lastingham is a place where community life thrives. A few of the locals said hello when we were out walking.

The local pub, just a short walk from the cottage, I've been told it offers hearty meals made from regional ingredients. I didn't eat in the pub this time as I had recently been glutened (somewhere else) so I just cooked my own food in the cottage instead, I will try out some of the recommended gluten free food soon though.

Tips for Visitors

For those planning a visit to The Green at Lastingham, a few practical tips can help make the experience even better:

  • Travel: The village is best reached by car, as public transport options are limited. Parking is available on the road outside of the cottage

  • Accommodation: Book well in advance, especially during spring and summer when the area attracts more visitors. Pets are welcome but must stay downstairs.

  • Walking gear: Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are essential for exploring the trails, The weather here can change pretty quickly so be prepared.

  • Local shops: Stock up on essentials before arriving, as the village has no shops. We just stopped at the Co-op in Kirkbymoorside which had everything we needed. It also has a good gluten free range.

  • Respect nature: Keep to marked paths and avoid disturbing wildlife to preserve the environment.

Why The Green at Lastingham Stands Out

What makes The Green at Lastingham special is its blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and genuine community warmth. Unlike more commercialised tourist spots, it offers an authentic rural experience. The slow pace encourages visitors to unwind and reconnect with the simple pleasures of life. I think it is so important for a stay somewhere you can just switch off from reality and relax, recharge and forget about the world even if its just for one day.

Final Thoughts on the Stay

Our recent stay at The Green at Lastingham was a refreshing break from our busy routines. The combination of scenic walks, welcoming locals, and tranquil surroundings created a memorable experience. For anyone looking to escape to a quiet corner of the English countryside, this village green offers a perfect setting.

Planning a visit here means embracing simplicity and slowing down. It’s a chance to enjoy fresh air, open spaces, and the warmth of a small community. The Green at Lastingham is not just a place to stay; it’s a place to feel at peace.

Some of our favourite things to do nearby.

Hutton Le Hole -

We always love a visit to Ryedale Folk Museum , you can also feed the pigs here. After the museum we like to wander around the village, visit the church and independent shops. Unfortunately the chocolate shop isn't open to the public anymore but you can pop along to Thornton le Dale where you can visit the open shop (all chocolate is gluten free)

We did visit the market in Kirkbymoorside which was lovely. Lots of locally produced offerings

Pickering is like a second home to us, we visit often and are on first name terms with the locals who we always call in to see. We usually visit the castle (English Heritage), the second hand bookstore is a must, The Hidden market (used to be the flea market) and of course North Yorkshire Moors Railway Pickering station is an absolute must visit for train lovers. Not forgetting Beck Isle Museum and some of the best local eateries. (Lots of Gluten free options)
